7th annual thankful hearts luncheon
Kathy Izard, author of The Hundred Story Home, shared her personal story at this year's Thankful Hearts Luncheon. Izard is based in Charlotte, NC where she started her award-winning career in graphic design and still lives with her family. While touring the Urban Ministry Center in 2007 where she volunteered serving soup, her life took a turn. A formerly homeless man turned best-selling author named Denver Moore issued her a challenge. He told her that while serving soup did help, there is one thing that a homeless person needs more than anything else -- a home. What was she going to do to fix that?
Izard soon closed her design business and set out on a journey to solve this problem. She joined the Urban Ministry Center staff and launched Charlotte's only Housing First program, Homeless to Homes. The pilot program turned into a $10 million campaign to build an apartment complex, Moore Place, named after the man who issued her that challenge. Moore Place became Charlotte's first permanent supportive housing for over 100 chronically homeless men and women.
