When Family Promise received a referral for a mother and daughter from Wilmington’s Domestic Violence Shelter, they quickly assessed urgent needs and lined up transitional housing for a low-cost place to heal physically, emotionally, and financially.
Urgent needs often exceed any one organization’s mission, so Family Promise also began the important work of collaboration with other Harrelson Center partners. They made sure mom had a refreshed and work-appropriate wardrobe through Philippians 3 Ministries, that the daughter had stimulating after-school programming through Young Scientist Academy, that Mom’s self-care was also supported, with a gift bag from Operation Pretty Things, and that the daughter could burn off energy in a healthy, happy way with a bike from A Bike For Every Child.
This one family found a community of organizations that responsively wrapped around their needs. Each partner nonprofit was able to address this family’s greater challenges by delivering on their specific mission. Within months of the initial referral, Family Promise was able to move this mother and daughter into permanent and independent housing where they could continue to thrive.
